Dust Devils - A Burning Man Movie
The
movie
Dust Devils available for purchase from the Burning Man
Marketplace; is another favorite in my Burning Man movie
collection. Here are my favorite quotes from the film.

I think that one
reason thousands of people are ready to endure survival
conditions in a remote place and the risk of their life is
because their desperate, certainly driven to find something
they can belong to. |

We offer them the
opportunity to be what all those ads offer, be yourself,
except the ads offer them a product as a substitute for that
experience, we offer them the real thing, then we offer them
communal belonging and that what the white people don't have. |
|
|
|
|
|
But if there were real
coverage of blacks and Hispanics in America, it would be
apparent that they have a cultural wealth that white people
don't have. So why would you if you had that, if you have a
community so vital that it produces rap music, why would you
travel thousands of miles to a desert to hang out with a bunch
of white people. |

We are all misfits and
outcasts, freaks and rebels and we are using this to find and
create our own families, our soul families. |

I came a few years ago
and found it a very powerful experience, a fabulous experiment
in community and just terrifically liberating. It's great to
be able to go somewhere and where a suit for once. You get all
kinds of views, it is good to know there are limits to
tolerance even at Burning Man. |

I think everyone who
comes goes thru a judgmental stage, first they are blown away
by it, often they are overawed by it and they want to hide or
go home. Then they come out the other side and throw
themselves into it, throw off their clothes and have exciting
adventures, do naked Tia Chi on the Playa and all that stuff. |
|
|
|
|
|
Then they become so
into being open and liberated that they start shouting abuse
at the cops who are only doing their job, or at a guy dressed
in a business suit and you go thru this weird intolerance
stage, its great to be free and liberated, its evil to be
uptight. Then they get past that stage and then you realize
that you cannot have a community that leaves out the flawed
humanity. |

Its all very well
loving Gay people, loving transgendered people and love guys
with piercing, oh their so nice, but love a real estate guy
now that's the fucking test. |

I think by the end of
it everybody realizes I am an artist, wow I thought I was a
real estate guy, I am an artistic real estate guy. Because
here people have the time and the space to find out what they
really enjoy. - Author of

It's being able to
step out of society for a week or so and get out of the real
world and live somewhere where things aren't commercial, you
do not have to get up and go to work in the morning and you
don't have to answer the phone, you don't have to turn on the
TV, you get up and hang out with your friends, get coffee,
loose track of time, do whatever you want, you get to step
away from the normal stress of life. |

We are going to party
tonight, the next day, the day after that, and the day after
that. Every time I leave Burning Man, I am exhausted and tired
and fed up but then the next week I start making plans to come
again. |

I come to Burning Man
because I fit in, I'm a jerk like all of these people here.
Some kind of semi-maniacal idiot with questionable
intelligence, I came here doing all kinds of crazy stuff cause
it fit right in, it was freakin fun. |

Burning Man organizers
say that there is not a profit being made and weather or not
that is true I cannot say, but who gives a fuck. |

This is all about
gifts, the art, the theme camps are gifts and in particular we
said you should produce these things to give to anyone, its
radically inclusive. It's not enough to do a neat vanity
project, make them accessible to everyone a benefactor to the
whole community. This city 3/4 of the people are actively
involved in creating it. |

Culture is based on
emulation, look what they did, gosh I could do that, I could
add onto that, I could do something greater. We all want to do
that, we should want to do that. It's you don't imagine you
can do something until you see an example of it. |

This is so inspiring,
you see people with the most amazing shit that they thought
of, it makes you think why don't I explore what amazing shit I
have inside me. |
